The loss of a pregnancy or a child is devastating. It is estimated that 1 in 4 pregnancies will end in miscarriage. Despite medical advances, infant mortality is a reality many parents face today.
Mothers who experience later miscarriage or still birth will develop a breast milk supply as the body moves through its natural post-birth cycle. A breastfeeding mother whose infant dies unexpectedly will continue to produce breast milk, despite her immense grief. This unanticipated, and perhaps unwelcome biological process can be overwhelming for mothers and families in the days and weeks following their loss.
Through a new strategic partnership with NorthernStar Mothers Milk Bank and The Pregnancy & Infant Loss Support Centre, The MOM (Mother's Own Milk) Project is proud to offer affordable breast pump rentals to bereaved parents in Calgary. Our goal is to support the health and healing of bereaved families, reduce the stress associated with lactation after loss, and provide an affordable way to donate breast milk after a loss if they decide donation is right for them.
